Boxing: Nacho Beristain refused to train Julio Cesar Chavez, he explains why

Nacho Beristain is one of the greatest trainers in boxing history and a member of the sport's Hall of Fame. Oscar de la Hoya, Daniel Zaragoza, Ricardo Lopez... the list of boxers who have passed through his tutelage is immense. However, one of them 'did not pass through his hands': Julio Cesar Chavez.

Chavez, with 108 victories, 6 defeats and 2 draws, besides being world champion in up to five occasions, is one of the few cases in which he did not establish a relationship at a sporting level.

The great Aztec fighter was never trained by Beristain and, as he himself confessed in the press conference prior to his tribute, he revealed the reasons why such scenario did not happen.

"A few times his mom told me. And I told the lady that I was very sorry, but I didn't want to be in Cristobal Rosas' shoes" (trainer of the three-time world champion in three different weights), explained Beristain himself.

Why didn't he want to train Chavez?

He continued with his explanation: "Once I was with him and I ended up all trampled. There were about 100 of them, just stomping, pushing and pulling on him the day he was robbed of the fight with (Miguel Angel) Gonzalez". The boxing trainer made reference to the famous fight against 'El Mago', held in 1998 and which ended in a draw, preventing Chavez from reaching 100 victories.

The trainer commented if he would have trained boxing's Cesar, but explained that his environment did not help: "Of course it did. But I would have looked for a way not to be with him. I was only with him when he fought Miguel Angel. Once I took him down in weight in Paris and another time I took him down in weight in Ciudad Juarez".
